TIMGAD

The Festival of Timgad is organized every July in the wilaya of Batna which is 650km east of Algiers.

The name of this festival comes from “THAMOUGADI” ancient Roman city, built in 100 after JC. It is located in the east of Batna, to wit 35km far from Annaba county town. This ancient city includes the Roman Theater whose amphitheater hosts Timgad evening shows with a seating capacity of 3000.

The first edition of the festival began in 1967 when the inhabitants of Aurès (wilaya of Batna) had the idea to institute a local festival to make known the cultural wealth of the city and to shed lights on its ancient Roman Theater. In 1969, this event transformed in a Mediterranean festival, then in 1973, in a popular arts festival which attracted several brother and friend countries such as Tunisia, Morocco, Libya, Mauritania, Lebanon, Egypt, Syria, France, Italy, Turkey, Spain and Yugoslavia.

Further to, it became a regular international annual meeting organized during the first weeks of July.

Suspended during the period (1986 - 1996), this festival resumed in 1998 where the ONCI wanted to express the determination of Algeria to carve out an international place within the cultural and artistic scene.
